In the summer of 1522, Suleiman the Magnificent assembled a fleet in the sheltered bay that is now Marmaris and pointed it at an island fifty kilometres to the west. The sultan rebuilt the small castle above the harbour that same year, using it as a staging post for the siege of Rhodes. The Knights Hospitaller surrendered on 1 January 1523, after six months behind their walls.
